The U.S Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit Calls on the Media to Exercise Restraint

From Judge Jose Cabranes' opinion in Brown v. Maxwell, 18-2868, (unsealing filings in Giuffre v. Maxwell):

"[T]he media does the public a profound disservice when it reports on parties' allegations uncritically....

"We therefore urge the media to exercise restraint in covering potentially defamatory allegations, and we caution the public to read such accounts with discernment."

Not a Way to Promote Freedom and Democracy on the Chinese Mainland

Two individuals, suspected of being linked to the police, were seized by protesters at the Hong Kong airport, August 13, searched and beaten. This is not what freedom and democracy is all about, but more likely resembles the mindset of the repressive society. The Wall Street Journal, in an August 14 editorial, termed "Tuesday's disorder...a propaganda victory for Beijing."

A Flood Anniversary (noted from one who was there)

Hard to imagine but August 19 marks the 64th anniversary of the flood, generated by Hurricane Diane, that devastated Winsted, Ct, taking eight lives, as well as many other communities in New England and Pennsylvania.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to the Ukraine to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev, August 19. Reports suggest that the Israeli prime minister might be seeking to serve as mediator between Ukraine and Russia, as part of a U.S.-led effort to end the conflict in Donbass. While in Ukraine , the prime minister and president will visit Babi Yar, the ravine in Kiev, to honor the memory of the more than 33,000 Jews massacred there by the Nazis and their Ukraine collaborators on September 20 and 30, 1941.
